Six Gen - We love animals and especially our dogs and they are treated that way. We give them the attention they deserve and they respond by being fantastic dogs. Being full time teachers and cattle farmers let us be able to put our dogs' welfare first.
Others - Keep dogs in small pens or kennels 24 hours per day and only have a small pen when they are breeding. The dogs only see people when they come to bring food and water. They rely on their dog's income and therefore treat them as livestock.
Six Gen - Our dogs always have the freedom to go to their 10 x 16 kennel, their large yard with a pecan tree for shade, or on our back porch to watch the world go by. They also have another dog porch under the tree to lay on or under. This keeps them mentally and physically healthy.
Others - Keep many dogs penned up in the same area or building where they are constantly walking in their waste and barking continually at each other.
Six Gen - We breed when our females are at their best health and a good time of year for breeding (summer puppies are extremely hard on the mom and puppies). Our primary concern is for our dogs.
Others - Breed their dogs every heat cycle resulting in females who have puppies before they have recovered from their last litter.
Six Gen - We installed 2 whelping beds in our kennel with a 2 foot wall, stairs for the pregnant or new mom, and a landing above the bed for the mom to lay on and watch her puppies. The walls of the whelping beds are shower board and the floor is linoleum with a large door at the back of both beds for easy cleaning. Two beds also allow us to move the puppies to the other bed so we can thoroughly clean the bed twice per day and allow it to dry. There are also heat lamps and a propane heater in the whelping beds to ensure the puppies stay warm and healthy. The mom has full access to her normal environment from the whelping beds.
Others - Mom has puppies in a small, concrete floored pen she which is hosed out every few days while the mom and puppies are still inside.
Six Gen - Our dogs are played with daily which makes them healthy mentally and physically. The highlight of their day is when the tennis racket and balls come out and they jump up and down with excitement. They also love their walks through the pastures running to smell everything they can.
Others - Dogs stay in a small pen all day.
